Όσοι έχουμε πιστέψει με πάθος στο πείραμα μιας Ευρώπης, που βασίζεται στις αξίες της δημοκρατίας, της ανάπτυξης με κοινωνική συνοχή, στο σεβασμό των κοινών κανόνων αλλά και στην αλληλεγγύη, ας εκπέμψουμε με κάθε τρόπο το SOS.

Εμπνευσμένοι Ευρωπαίοι του 1957 απάντησαν στο «ειρήνη ή πόλεμος» με τη δημιουργία της Ευρώπης. Σήμερα αληθινοί Πατριώτες και συνειδητοποιημένοι Ευρωπαίοι πρέπει να απαντήσουν στο ίδιο δίλημμα. Γιατί πόλεμος είναι να χάνει μια χώρα το 20% του ΑΕΠ σε 18 μήνες.

Πόλεμος είναι να αρχίζουν συσσίτια στις ευρωπαϊκές πρωτεύουσες.

Πόλεμος είναι να φεύγουν εκατομμύρια νέοι, κατά κανόνα τα πιο λαμπρά μυαλά, από τις χώρες τους.

Εσύ ως Πρόεδρος της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής, με τους άλλους Προέδρους προηγουμένων περιόδων αλλά και με πολιτικούς από όλες τις χώρες, μπορούμε και πρέπει να ενεργοποιήσουμε τις δυνάμεις της πολιτικής και της κοινωνίας. Οι χώρες που έχουν προβλήματα πληρώνουν με το παραπάνω λαθεμένες πολιτικές, τα λάθη συνολικών κοινωνικών συμπεριφορών, αλλά και την κυριαρχία αδιαφανών οικονομικών συμφερόντων σε διεθνές επίπεδο. Μεταρρυθμίσεις, πρωτόγνωρα σε σκληρότητα μέτρα, κατάρρευση των πολιτικών συστημάτων, ανατροπή του μοντέλου ζωής, είναι το ισχυρό και «παραδειγματικό» τίμημα. Την ίδια στιγμή όμως η Ευρώπη οφείλει να ανασυνταχθεί.

• Το Συμβουλίου Κορυφής πρέπει να λειτουργήσει όπως είναι ο στόχος του, δηλαδή να υπηρετήσει το ευρωπαϊκό συμφέρον λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τα επιμέρους εθνικά συμφέροντα.

• Στους μηχανισμούς στήριξης EFSF και EFM πρέπει να χορηγηθούν αυξημένα κεφάλαια τώρα, ώστε να ενεργήσουν προληπτικά αντί του να θεραπεύουν μετά τα γεγονότα

• Η έκδοση ευρωομολόγων και ο φόρος επί των συναλλαγών θα έδινε την εικόνα μιας Ευρώπης σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο, που θέλει και μπορεί να υπερασπιστεί το συνολικό της συμφέρον.

• Τέλος, υπενθυμίζω το ευρωπαϊκό αναπτυξιακό πρόγραμμα με τα διευρωπαϊκά δίκτυα όπως μεταφορών, τηλεπικοινωνιών που θα πυροδοτούσαν δορυφορικές επενδύσεις σε όλες τις χώρες.

Η Ελλάδα, η Ιταλία και η Ισπανία, η Πορτογαλία, η Ιρλανδία, κατόπιν το Βέλγιο, η Γαλλία…η πυρκαγιά απλώνεται καίγοντας ζωές και ευρωπαϊκά κεκτημένα δεκαετιών. Όποιος πιστεύει ότι θα σταματήσει στη γραμμή των συνόρων του είναι απλά ανιστόρητος.

Ας κινηθούμε άμεσα τώρα ενισχύοντας φωνές σημαντικών Ευρωπαίων ηγετών και δημιουργώντας μια κίνηση «Ευρώπη SOS» για την αναστροφή της πορείας, για να σβήσουμε την πυρκαγιά και να δώσουμε προοπτική πριν είναι πολύ αργά.

Ας πάρουμε πρωτοβουλία ΤΩΡΑ.

Dear Romano,

Both our countries are undergoing a deep crisis with profoundly negative repercussions on national sovereignty, democratic functioning but especially on peoples’ everyday lives and the prospects of future generations.

Today, it has become evident that the crisis involves all of Europe and is gradually laying claim on even more countries, regardless of size. The solution and answer to the drama we are all living in, and for which each country has its own share of responsibility can only be found through a coherent European intervention. It requires solutions which will take us towards a convincingly effective and trustworthy European Economic Governance Model.

Today the European Union is undergoing more than a deep economic crisis. It is undergoing an institutional crisis of unprecedented scope which is closely bordering humiliation. The European Commission today is almost non functional with its initiative prerogative seriously curbed and with little, if any, freedom to initiate anything else. The constant search for balance between national representation and power at the administrative level has produced a paralyzed bureaucracy with limited effectiveness. The European Parliament is silent, its voice rarely heard. The European Council has been shrunk by the authority of its financial powerhouse, Germany.

All of us, and especially those who have actively participated in national and European politics need to carefully study our History. It is the only way to try to successfully shape our future. We do know that a Europe with tens of millions of its citizens humiliated living on the edge of the poverty line will have no vision nor belief in any prosperity and peace. Therefore, all of us, and especially those who passionately believed in a Europe united by common values, economic development and social cohesion, and guided by the respect of common rules and solidarity, must urgently emit an SOS in any possible way we can.

Inspired Europeans in 1957 answered the question “War or Peace” with the creation of the European Community. Today, true patriots and convinced Europeans need to respond to the same dilemma because:

• It is like a war when a country loses 20% of its GDP in eighteen months.

• It is like a war when we have the reappearance of rations in European capitals.

• It is like a war when millions of young people, the best and the brightest, leave their countries behind, and thus impoverished, in search of a better future.

Dear Romano, it is vital that yourself, as a former EC President along with your predecessors and politicians from throughout Europe can and must combine and energise societal and political forces throughout. Countries in dire straits   are paying a heavy price for their misjudged policies,  the mistakes of their social majorities, and the dominance of global, non transparent financial interests. Reforms, unprecedented harsh measures, the collapse of entire political systems and the upheaval of the quality of life as we knew it are the harsh prices that are being paid.   At the same time, however, Europe needs to regroup, respond and react. Europe is its people, its leaders, it is us.

• It is time for the European Council to function as per its inherent mission. That means it must serve European interests while constantly also taking into consideration the various (and varying) national interests. We need proactive action on all fronts.

• It is time to sufficiently grand the supporting mechanisms EFSF, EFM, increased capital now so that they can intervene in advance instead of trying to heal after the fact.

• Eurobonds and a Tobin Tax would show the world that Europe is willing and able to protect its interests.

• Europe’s development programs and the Trans-European transport and communication networks could provide the impetus and flare a series of satellite investments throughout our continent.

Greece, Italy, Spain Portugal, Ireland, followed by Belgium and even France, are in the midst of a “forest fire” which is spreading alarmingly fast destroying lives and eradicating as fast, well established and gained rights of the past decades. The belief that such a fire can be stopped at any national borders is misjudged and historically without credence.

Let us move now by strengthening the voices of significant European leaders and dignitaries by creating a movement for the soul of Europe, “Europe SOS”, for the reversal of our course, for extinguishing ongoing threats, offering a common perspective and securing our collective future before it is too late. 

The time for initiative is NOW. Let us seize it.
